KTB Celebrates Kapsabet Half Marathon Winners, Announces Future Plans

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) continues to bolster its position as a leading tourist destination by leveraging Kenya’s rich heritage and diverse attractions. In a grand ceremony held in Kapsabet over the weekend, KTB honored the winners of the inaugural Kapsabet Half Marathon, which took place in March 2024. The marathon, which attracted both local and international athletes, aligns with KTB’s broader strategy of showcasing Kenya as the "Home of Great Marathons," while also spotlighting the country's unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and sporting excellence.

In addition to announcing partnerships with key international marathons, KTB revealed plans to collaborate with athletics training camp owners across the country. This initiative aims to promote these facilities to international trainees and sports enthusiasts. KTB CEO Ms. June Chepkemei highlighted Kenya's rising status as an athletics powerhouse, which continues to draw international trainees eager to train alongside Kenyan athletes. "We have witnessed a number of international visitors enrolling for training either for physical health or competition. Here is an opportunity for us to seize and make Kenya a training ground," Ms. Chepkemei said. She also urged investors to enhance their training facilities to improve the experience for all trainees, emphasizing the potential of regions like the Rift Valley, Central, and Ukambani, known for their athletics training camps.

Looking ahead, KTB announced that the second edition of the Kapsabet Half Marathon is slated for next year's Easter weekend and is anticipated to be even bigger and better. The CEO also disclosed KTB's plans to partner with the organizers of major marathons such as the Standard Chartered and Eldoret City marathons to attract international participants. "As a destination known for marathoners, we have a better opportunity to work with partners in pitching some of the marathons to enlist international participants," Ms. Chepkemei added. These efforts underscore KTB's commitment to making Kenya the ultimate destination for sports tourism, attracting athletes and enthusiasts from around the globe.
